Revolutionizing bone graft surgeries through 3D printing

An innovation in bone repair developed at Ryerson University is revolutionizing orthopedic surgery. Samin Eftekhari’s research led to the development of synthetic bone grafts that are customizable, biodegradable and less intrusive for patients, requiring only one surgery. The result is convenience for patients and cost savings for hospitals. Since 2012, Samin has been developing her patented technology by conducting experiments at Ryerson and St. Michael’s Hospital, an industry partner. Along the way, she received more than $100,000 in fellowships and awards from Ryerson as a graduate student, and started a company, Artin Biomed in the Biomedical Zone, a joint incubator with St. Mike’s.
