TORONTO, March 13, 2020 – “Ontario’s universities have a significant role to play in helping to “flatten the curve” and slow the spread of COVID-19.
Ontario’s universities have been in consultation with public health officials regarding COVID-19 since January of this year. Based on recent consultations with public health officials, universities have suspended in-person instruction and are moving to technology assisted solutions and other forms of delivery.
Ontario universities take the decision to suspend in-person instruction very seriously. We are taking significant steps to ensure that we do our part to help control the spread of COVID-19.
Universities recognize our social responsibility to respond to the pandemic in a way that protects our students and the communities in which our institutions reside. Our institutions are also playing an active role in scientific research related to COVID-19 as evidenced by the isolation of the virus by Ontario faculty and researchers yesterday. We are committed to providing whatever assistance is required to help address the pandemic.
Ontario universities take our obligation to protecting students and staff very seriously and recognize our shared obligation to act in the best interests of our communities and province. We are committed to providing expert advice where needed and assisting in research. Ontario university healthcare facilities, faculty and staff are prepared to provide support, assist in testing and management and care for those who are sick.
We will continue to work directly with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Colleges and Universities, and local health units to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and ensure the health and safety of our students, staff and communities.”
– David Lindsay, President and CEO, Council of Ontario Universities
