Adapting mental health services to support student needs

While some students seeking mental health services may benefit from speaking with a counsellor, others may need other resources, such as self-help or peer support.

Ontario Tech University’s Mental Health Services is leveraging a “stepped care” approach to mental health. Through this approach, a student wellness co-ordinator becomes the first point of care, conducting an assessment to determine the best mental health supports for each student based on their unique needs. Once the co-ordinator completes their assessment, they will connect the student with various mental health services and options, such as self-help, single session supports, peer support, workshops, groups, one-on-one therapy or specialized supports.

Stepped care also helps reduce wait times, improve access to resources and create a more collaborative approach to mental health support.
