Addressing Veterinarian Shortages in Rural and Northern Communities

To address the current veterinarian workforce shortages in rural and northern communities, the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) at the University of Guelph is expanding its Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program through a new partnership with Lakehead University. This expansion, known as the Collaborative Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program, is designed to train veterinarians to serve Indigenous communities, rural, remote and underserved areas in northern Ontario.

The inaugural Northern Ontario cohort of 20 students will commence at OVC in the fall of 2025. These students will complete the Rural Community Practice Stream in their fourth year with options for external placement opportunities in Northern Ontario.
