Bridging the Gap Between Research and Commercialization

With a goal to enable researchers and clinicians to transform health care breakthroughs into market-ready solutions, the University of Toronto’s Entrepreneur in Residence (EiR) program is bridging the gap between research and commercialization. By connecting participants with business and entrepreneurship leaders, the program empowers them to bring impactful innovations to patients and improve lives.

The EiR program supports researchers and clinicians in commercializing health innovations by offering expertise in areas such as intellectual property, regulation and leadership. At the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, the EiR program helps hospital clinician-researchers address clinical challenges by developing solutions operationalized across multiple sites, such as tools for kidney stone removal and real-time clinical teaching platforms.

The program also integrates work-based learning by providing researchers with practical, hands-on mentorship and direct engagement with business leaders, enabling them to commercialize their innovations and gain real-world entrepreneurial experience. This initiative strengthens the pipeline from lab to market, improving patient care and bolstering Ontario’s life sciences sector.
