Certificate Program Empowers Registered Nurses to Prescribe in Ontario

With a goal to provide communities with faster and easier access to specific treatments in Ontario, the University of Windsor is offering a new certification program that will allow Registered Nurses (RNs) to prescribe certain medications.

Previously, only specialized healthcare providers such as physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, dentists, optometrists and chiropractors had the authority to prescribe medications. Now, with the College of Nurses of Ontario-approved certificate from the Ontario University Consortium RN Prescribing Education Program, RNs in Ontario will be able to prescribe medications for treatments and health care such as contraception, immunization, smoking cessation and topical wound care.

This innovative and responsive program, done in collaboration between the University of Windsor’s Faculty of Nursing, Continuing Education and with the Ontario Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner consortium, promotes the expansion of RN scope of practice and improves access to care for Ontarians.
