Collaborating to inform disease prevention and surveillance

To help better predict, prevent and respond to emerging infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, researchers at York University are developing the One Health Modelling Network for Emerging Infections to help inform disease prevention and prevent future public health crises.

One Health will leverage collaboration and multidisciplinary knowledge from across 23 Canadian universities and 28 national and international organizations. Together, they will explore the connections between environmental, animal and human health to refine existing disease modelling used to identify pathogens early. They will also focus their efforts on five key areas: early detection, early warning systems, early responses and mitigation and control of developing epidemics.

Models developed from the network are expected to lead to the identification of critical data and modelling gaps. By identifying the gaps, the network can help target surveillance and data and use the data in disease modelling including within specific communities.
