Knowing when and how to assist youth experiencing a mental health crisis could help save lives. Researchers at Nipissing University, in partnership with the North Bay Police Service and Hands the Family Help Network, developed an artificial intelligence powered smartphone software for police that uses algorithms to quickly compute risk and the behavioural levels of youth experiencing a mental health crisis.
Once implemented, the software will help police better identify mental health crises and streamline the approach for assisting youth through data sharing with community partners. By connecting mental health services, hospital staff and mental health agencies with a patient’s previous interactions with police, community partners will be fully informed and better prepared when they receive the patient under their care.
