“We want our students to know that we’re there for them. If they are in St. Catharines or have headed to their home communities, we want them to feel that they are part of our Brock family.”

Connecting through crafts and online Elder visits

While physical spaces are closed during COVID-19, Brock University’s Aboriginal Student Services (AbSS) is ensuring students remain connected through informative social media posts, interactive crafts and online Elder visits.

In particular, the university’s Aboriginal Events Co-ordinator, Cindy Biancaniello, is providing sanitized craft kits to Indigenous students, focusing on different areas of Indigenous art and design. The kits come with instructions and a link to the AbSS Instagram account for more information.

The team is also distributing the kits to members of the Niagara Catholic District School Board’s Soaring Eagles programs to share information about First Nations, Inuit and Métis cultures.
