"We want to get a self-administered test out the door as quickly as we can. It could be really important for identifying new clusters and stopping community spread by asymptomatic carriers."

Creating a portable COVID-19 testing kit

In order to develop rapid testing for COVID-19 and alleviate pressures on the health-care system, a team of researchers at McMaster University’s Biointerfaces Institute is leveraging existing work on portable testing kits.

The researchers are adapting their work in developing tests for E. coli and C. difficile to create a version for COVID-19 that could be ready for approval and production in the next few months.

The rapid test is similar to a drugstore pregnancy test and is safe to use at home, reducing the wait time for users.
