Intellectual property expert Michael Geist led the public response to changes to Canada’s copyright laws in 2007. A law professor at the University of Ottawa, Geist lobbied for more user-oriented provisions in a digital age. The Supreme Court has since cited his work on reconciling creator and user rights in several of its copyright decisions.

The modernized Copyright Act of Canada now takes users into account in everything from educational uses of copyright works to the creation of user-generated content.
