Developing Affordable, Energy-Efficient New Homes and Housing Retrofits

A strong housing sector strengthens all our communities and directly improves the lives of Ontarians.

To help strengthen the sector, Carleton University professor Cynthia Cruickshank is finding innovative materials and design strategies for completing retrofits and building new homes in ways that prioritize affordability and energy conservation.

Researchers at Cruickshank’s new Centre for Advanced Building Envelope Research will explore how heat, air and moisture move through materials and highly insulated wall systems, and how these elements contribute to resident health, comfort and building science risks.

Through collaborations with industry, government and academia, Cruickshank is creating learning opportunities for workers, including construction trades, building designers, engineers, project managers and building science researchers.
