The University of Toronto’s Yu-Ling Cheng and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation partnered to design a toilet that can disinfect human waste without connections to water, sewer or grid power. The system, which is expected to cost less than five cents per person per day, separates solid and liquid waste. Solids are burned via a smoldering process, leaving behind sterile ash. The liquid is pasteurized using heat generated from solid waste smoldering.
The result is a toilet that is sustainable, easy to use and reduces disease for billions in the developing world.
