Developing health and safety talent in northern Ontario

Skilled occupational health and safety (OHS) professionals can help businesses operate more efficiently. Through a paid health and safety internship program, Laurentian University is connecting students with workplaces in rural and northern communities to provide them with hands-on experience and support regional businesses.

Students help identify and solve OHS challenges – from employee mental health supports to analyzing safety data – through observation and participation in company activities. The program further aims to match student skills with an identified workplace project to help businesses resolve key health and safety challenges and provide them with access to new skillsets, such as data analysis and research.

The internship program is coordinated by the university’s Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health (CROSH), which helps create solutions to workplace challenges faced by industry in northern Ontario through research and innovation.
