By blending traditional Indigenous ecological knowledge with modern science, one project at Algoma University is promoting sustainable agriculture and improving local food systems to help tackle food insecurity in remote First Nation communities.
Aiming to create sustainable agricultural practices that can be applied in local communities, the research initiative is led by an Algoma University archaeologist in collaboration with the Food Bank Farm, Niigaaniin and the Rural Agri-Innovation Network (RAIN). It explores the use of Terra Preta, an ancient Amazonian soil enrichment method, and its adaptation to Northern Ontario’s unique environmental conditions.
The project aims to enhance soil health, boost crop yields and foster long-term food sustainability. The partnership ensures that research findings translate into practical solutions, making agricultural practices in local communities more sustainable and helping strengthen food security across the region.
