"The most incredible thing about this initiative is how people have come together in such a short period of time with everyone ready to sign on and help in various ways."

Exploring treatments for COVID-19 patients

Finding treatments for COVID-19 is critical for improving outcomes for those exhibiting severe symptoms.

A group of researchers, led by McMaster University’s Centre for Transfusion Research director, Donald Arnold, has launched one of the world’s largest clinical trials for a potential treatment for the virus.

The treatment involves taking blood plasma, which contains antibodies, from people who have recovered from COVID-19, and giving it to patients who have been hospitalized with it.

The university is collaborating with the Canadian Transfusion Research Network, Canadian Blood Services, Héma-Québec and academic partners across the country.
