Finding Solutions to Maximize Underused Spaces

Providing a range of housing options that meet the everyday needs of Ontarians is crucial to establishing robust communities and improving quality of life throughout the province.

That is why the University of Toronto’s School of Cities has released a plan to boost mixed-use development in Toronto, co-locating housing with businesses, non-profits and government buildings. The university is partnering with the City’s real estate agency on public property development projects, such as fire and paramedic stations with affordable housing built above them.

By co-locating housing with these underused lands through a mixed-use model, municipalities can make more efficient use of limited space, unlock new opportunities for the development of affordable housing that meets the diverse needs of residents and foster complete communities.
