To help create a welcoming space for Indigenous students, learners and community members on campus, Toronto Metropolitan University is collaborating with local Indigenous artists to transform university spaces through public art.
In consultation with the Toronto Metropolitan community, the university has installed five public artworks that aim to increase awareness of Indigenous rights, histories and perspectives among members of the campus and local community.
The university also expects to launch additional artwork in 2022 and beyond, including a mural addressing climate change, in partnership with the Wapatah Centre for Indigenous Visual Knowledge, and a birch bark canoe to honour the role Indigenous entrepreneurs played in shaping Canada’s economic history.
