Providing students with hands-on research experience and skills to address the growing demand in the biomedical field is critical to support future innovation in STEM. Through the Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences Summer Scholars Program (SSP), McMaster University offers students opportunities to research and explore key biomedical specializations, empowering the next generation of scientists.
The program features an intensive two-week research skills bootcamp followed by a ten-week laboratory placement, equipping students with cutting-edge skills, mentorship, and career development opportunities in STEM. Participants this year conducted research in areas such as avian influenza, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and obesity.
To further promote diversity in STEM, the program offers full summer research scholarships to Ontario-based undergraduate students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or 2SLGBTQIA+, helping them develop skills that will support future scientific advancements and contribute to healthcare innovation in the province and around the world.
