Gaining hands-on experience through joint engineering program

An industry-university partnership in Northern Ontario is showing students they don’t need to leave their communities to pursue an education and secure a well-paying job.

Algoma University, in partnership with Laurentian University and local industry, is offering the Pathway to Engineering program, helping students transition from school to work and towards becoming Professional Engineers without having to leave the region.

Algoma Steel is one industry partner, providing placements for students and helping develop a skilled workforce in the local steel and advanced manufacturing industry. The company has committed to providing 12-month paid work terms in Sault Ste. Marie.

The partnership addresses identified challenges within Northern Ontario’s advanced manufacturing sector, a region of the province that has long struggled with youth out-migration, an aging population and fluctuations in employment.

Through the Pathway program, students can choose from pathways in mechanical, mining or chemical engineering.
