An Algoma University researcher has made a groundbreaking discovery in the world of regenerative medicine by discovering how to regrow frog limbs after they have been lost.
Led by assistant professor Nirosha Murugan, the study administered a five-drug silicone cap or “smart bandage”, which was placed over the frogs’ wound for a 24-hour treatment period. After 18 months, the frogs were able to grow back functional limbs with nerves, muscles and bones, while researchers were also able to minimize pain associated with limb loss.
Due to a frog’s strong biological connection to humans, the outcome is promising, but more research is needed before this technology can be used to treat humans.
