Access to an evidence-based modelling tool, which supports clinical leadership in decisions about planning high-quality care environments, quality of work life and safety at the unit level, is a welcome addition."

Helping hospitals manage workloads

A new modelling tool using computer simulations is helping hospitals manage staff workloads and safety protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A team of researchers from Ryerson University and staff members at the University Health Network are partnering to create a virtual care unit that can predict potential impacts of COVID-19 on hospital workloads.

The modelling is based on a range of factors, such as, the type of tasks, frequency of tasks and level of sickness in patients. Its aim is to enable hospitals to plan efficiently and make adjustments to staff workloads, ultimately helping to reduce the burden on the health-care system.
