Helping hospitals screen patients for COVID-19

Throughout the pandemic, hospitals have used screening tools to detect potential patient cases of COVID-19. Researchers at the University of Guelph, in partnership with St. Joseph’s Health Network and IRIS Research and Development Group, have developed a hand-held thermal camera-based imaging tool powered by machine learning that enhances COVID-19 screening protocols to provide more accurate screening results.

Used at screening locations, the device can quickly detect common symptoms linked to COVID-19 such as higher heart rate, body temperature or breathing rate to indicate a potential infection. Hospital staff can then flag individuals for further testing, preventing them from unknowingly spreading the virus. This way, cases can be more effectively triaged, contained and monitored, helping keep staff and other patients safe.
