Ensuring all residents have access to accurate COVID-19 vaccination information helps reduce vaccine hesitancy and increase immunization rates. Students at Ryerson University volunteered as community ambassadors as part of a group of frontline service workers, community members, medical professionals and social workers to help increase vaccination rates and awareness in a Toronto neighbourhood.
Students went door-to-door, speaking with residents with the goal of identifying potential barriers to accessing the vaccine and helping residents book appointments. Students also helped translate flyers to ensure information was accessible to all residents.
Within one week, community ambassadors knocked on more than 1,800 doors, booked more than 1,200 vaccine appointments and encouraged more than 4,000 newcomers to get immunized.
