“Students have been a tremendous asset. They are not just working on the periphery but delivering actual software. We’ve had outstanding students! When they return to school it’s like losing a full-time team member.”

Leveraging Top University Tech Talent

Attracting top-tier emerging tech talent is critical for newer companies and is not always an easy task. By partnering with Rocket Innovation Studio (RIS), the University of Waterloo is helping the company fill key technology roles with student talent.

With a Waterloo computer engineering alum as CEO and the help of talented co-op students, RIS is making its mark in the Canadian fintech industry by building customized information technology (IT) solutions for businesses. The company hires Mathematics and Engineering co-op students as software developers each term and senior software developers mentor the students as they work on the same tasks as full-time developers.

From user experience to back-end and front-end infrastructure development, co-op students are learning and gaining valuable experience by working on different technologies than those they’ve been exposed to in the classroom. Students also have the opportunity to work on various AI related projects including different cloud technologies – key experiences that helps them develop their professional and technical skills to move forward with their career goals while also supporting the needs of a growing business.
