Extreme winter weather events require the mobilization of significant municipal resources to clear roads and sidewalks and get people, goods and services moving safely again. That’s why a researcher at Ontario Tech University is leveraging algorithms and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to optimize snow removal planning across Ontario.
In partnership with the Municipality of Clarington and the City of Oshawa, Dr. Jaho Seo is testing and implementing the technology through field tests that consider on-site weather conditions and real-time routing situations. The goal of the partnerships is to generate the optimal route and the shortest travel time for snow plows while maximizing pedestrian safety.
Once the real-time data is evaluated, it will help communities determine the ideal allocation of available resources and budgets, potentially leading to cost savings for both municipalities and residents.
