“This situation has brought our hospitals and community partners together in ways that we never anticipated. We continue to be humbled by the response of so many in the community who are leaning in to support the regional health system and enabling us to manage a potential surge in need.”

Partnering with hospitals to provide temporary housing

To help hospitals provide temporary housing to health-care professionals and patients during COVID-19, Wilfrid Laurier University partnered with hospitals across Western Ontario to help meet their changing needs.

Administrative staff at Laurier connected with several regional hospitals to create agreements for use of spaces, not only to house health care professionals, but to enable hospitals to care for patients with lower care needs should the health system require overflow space. The partnership includes Grant River Hospital, Cambridge Memorial Hospital, St. Mary’s General Hospital, Guelph General Hospital, Wellington Healthcare Alliance and St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph.

To date Laurier has provided shelter to 150 health-care professionals from Grant River hospital who are choosing to live away from home during the pandemic and have also secured protocols and an additional 300 spaces for patient overflow.
