I was thrilled when one of our CityLAB projects was selected to be presented to the Hamilton’s City Council to showcase the partnership between W Booth School and CityLAB. This was a unique opportunity for my international graduate students to solve Hamilton’s local issues while realizing the benefits of collaborative approach to engineering design and problem-solving in real time.

Partnering with the City of Hamilton to tackle real-world challenges

A partnership between the City of Hamilton and postsecondary institutions is producing real solutions to real-world challenges.

CityLAB, a pilot program launched in 2017 in partnership with McMaster University, Mohawk College, Redeemer University and the City of Hamilton, provides a forum for students to apply their technical skills to practical challenges. Students learn how to navigate complex, multi-stakeholder projects, while developing highly marketable skills as professionals entering or re-entering the workforce.

Projects include finding immediate solutions to problems that Ontarians face on a daily basis, such as fighting chronic homelessness, helping university students cut down on food waste or reducing senior isolation.
