Preparing healthy meals for those in need

To help address local food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic, chefs from the University of Guelph’s kitchens are helping feed Guelph’s most vulnerable citizens.

The program, launched by The SEED, a not-for-profit organization at the Guelph Community Health Centre, is being supported in partnership with the university’s hospitality service with the goal to help end local food insecurity and eliminate barriers to healthy food.

The university chefs are currently preparing about 500 meals a week. They are working with suppliers, providing recipes and packaging the meals. The SEED delivers meals to the Guelph community daily to those in need because of isolation, lack of money or other circumstances brought on by the pandemic.

This collaboration between the University of Guelph, The SEED, The City of Guelph, Wellington County and public health officials is connecting approximately 300 households and estimates over 50,000 meal deliveries per week.
