Repurposing vacant dorms for community isolation spaces

Finding a place to self-isolate after being assessed for COVID-19 can be challenging – a challenge that is all the more difficult for families and individuals fleeing domestic abuse or experiencing homelessness.

To support people who are in need of temporary housing, the City of Ottawa and the University of Ottawa have partnered to use vacant residence dorm units.

There is currently enough space to house 65 people safely, with each space equipped with necessities, such as, cooking supplies, microwaves and refrigerators.

In addition, the City will coordinate food services for those who are housed, while the university’s facilities will ensure each unit is cleaned and prepared between residents’ arrival and departure times.
