Carleton University researcher Steven Fai and team are restoring the deteriorated sandstone carvings on Parliament Hill’s exterior using cutting-edge digital technology and 3-D printing to build a three-dimensional database of the Centre Block. As Director of the university’s Immersive Media Studio, the studio is an intersection between architecture and virtual reality, allowing Fai to pioneer a new method to aid in the restoration and modernization of heritage buildings.
The approach includes lasers and cameras that scan and capture every architectural feature and detail.
