Safeguarding nuclear waste through research and innovation

The deadline to finding a viable solution for nuclear waste storage is drawing closer as governments and industry look to safeguard used nuclear fuel.

With investment from the Nuclear Waste Management Organization, a Western University researcher is helping address this challenge through expertise in electrochemical processes and corrosion to help identify where, when and how impurities in the existing storage canisters’ coating could affect corrosion.

This research is filling an important gap in understanding the lifespan of canister coatings and mitigating the potential degradation that might take place, providing insight into a long-term storage solution for nuclear waste that is safe for both people and the environment.
