“There is really no other institution in the world that has attempted to create something like this. It is ambitious in terms of its disciplinary scope, its focus on research and teaching as well as outreach, bringing the best insights from research and scholarship to applications in the city.”

School of Cities: Bringing minds together to rethink urban issues

The University of Toronto’s new School of Cities is an ambitious new interdisciplinary hub that aims to be a global leader in providing innovative solutions to urban issues.

In a world where more than half the population live in urban environments, the School’s mission is to “be a world-leading centre for innovative interdisciplinary urban research, education and engagement. It is where diverse communities will come together to spark new insights and design creative ways for cities and their citizens to thrive.”

More than three years in the planning, the School aims to build cross-disciplinary teams that draw from the more than 220 faculty members at U of T who conduct urban-focused research, representing over 40 academic units and divisions, from engineering and architecture to urban planning and public health.

Among the school’s initial plans are hosting a global cities summit that will assemble the world’s leading urban thinkers, and creating an urban lab where undergraduate and graduate students will work with faculty, industry and government partners to solve specific urban problems.
