“I wanted to find a way to offer residents a social connection so they wouldn’t feel as alone during self-isolation, and to let them know that the community is standing by their side.”

Sending inspirational messages to seniors

To help seniors stay socially connected while remaining physically distant, a student at the University of Windsor is sending personalized messages.

Law student Jessica Hammond was inspired to create the SENcerely Project after learning about the potential impacts of social isolation on seniors, as many long-term care and retirement homes are limiting visitors.

She developed an online form to gather messages and encouraged volunteers to share a poem, story and their personal reflections on the pandemic. More than a dozen residences across Southwestern Ontario and in Calgary have signed on to receive letters.
