Supporting long-term care homes during COVID-19 and beyond

Health-care professionals at long-term care homes in Canada have faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. In many cases, due to prioritizing infection control routines around social distancing and personal protective equipment, staff have been unable to provide the usual levels of relational care to residents, which typically focuses on human connection.

To address this issue, Ryerson University researchers from the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing are aiming to help improve relational care for older Ontarians in Ontario long-term care homes during the COVID-19 outbreak and the future.

The team will meet with health-care professionals and family members, and identify best practices to create innovative strategies that address the well-being of seniors and their health-care providers.

The research is being led by professors Sepali Guruge and Lori Schindel Martin, of the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing within the Faculty of Community Services at Ryerson University.
