Attracting and retaining talent in rural and northern communities is critical to fueling a region’s workforce, particularly in high-demand areas, such as life sciences and agri-food. In light of a growing shortage of veterinarians, the University of Guelph is helping support access to vital veterinary talent and services across the province through the Veterinary Capacity Program. Many end up living and working within the community after graduation.
By offering student placements in remote and northern communities through an eight-week externship, the program ensures an ongoing supply of rural and agricultural veterinarians to support private practice and the livestock agri-food sector.
