The increasing number of individuals experiencing homelessness in London, Ont. recently caught the attention of Western University students wanting to make a difference, sparking the creation of a student-led advocacy group called Purple Hands.
Through Purple Hands, student volunteers collect donations, support weekly meal service programs and build relationships with vulnerable residents in the local community. The group also raises awareness around homelessness in London through evidence-based blogs, events and social media platforms.
To increase the group’s reach, Purple Hands partnered with Western Services Network, which allows students to participate in an education series and earn a credit on their co-curricular records. In addition, Purple Hands is developing a framework for students across Canada for how they can create change in their own communities.
