Millions of scrap tires are generated every year and only a fraction of the discarded rubber is ever recycled. University of Waterloo chemical engineering researcher Costas Tzoganakis has developed an innovative technology that chemically breaks down — devulcanizes — tire rubber so it’s suitable for reuse. With support from the university’s Commercialization Office, the start-up Tyromer Inc. was launched to commercialize Tzoganakis’ invention. The start-up offers manufacturers around the world a cheaper and greener way to recycle old tires.
