Testing wastewater to detect COVID-19 cases on campus and in the community

To help communities and regions detect COVID-19 early, researchers at the University of Windsor are testing resident wastewater and student saliva on a volunteer basis. Their work is enabling them to track and share COVID-19 case data in the Windsor-Essex community and on campus.

Results of the monitoring are shared through an online real-time dashboard that combines results from early sampling with disease outbreaks detected and reported by health authorities. The surveillance will help identify COVID-19 cases in order for health authorities, hospitals and the university to proactively put measures in place and mitigate community spread.

In addition, the testing system can be used to monitor other viruses, pathogens or food-borne illness in the future to ensure ongoing public health preparedness.
