Ontario’s Universities Celebrate International Women’s Day

TORONTO, March 8, 2024 – Across the province, Ontario’s universities are recognizing International Women’s Day through events and initiatives designed to bring students, staff, faculty and community members together to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and foster equity on campuses.

Below is a highlight of the community events, workshops and discussions that are taking place at universities across Ontario.

Algoma University

Through the “Recognize a Woman” initiative, Algoma University is celebrating the positive influence and contributions of its women staff members by offering students, faculty and staff the opportunity to send a message of recognition to a woman who works for Algoma University that has had a positive influence in their lives. In honor of International Women’s Day, Brock University’s President Lesley Rigg joined keynote speaker Chinyere Eni at a Women Leaders breakfast, to discuss women’s experiences in leadership roles. Brock University Professional and Continuing Studies was one of the event’s sponsors. Learn more

Carleton University is recognizing the accomplishments and contributions of amazing women in our community by sharing stories of the achievements and contributions of women leaders across the university through a series of events. Learn more

Laurentian University

To discuss the importance of equity, diversity and inclusion and clarity in communication, Laurentian University is hosting “Lessons in Leadership and Communications from Antarctica with Women in STEMM”. Learn more

Lakehead University

In honour of International Women’s Day, students, staff, and faculty at Lakehead University are invited for photos, social media engagement, card & button making, hot chocolate, and popcorn in the International Student Lounge. Learn more

In celebration of Internation Women’s Day, McMaster University shares insight from women as they reflect on leadership and inclusive excellence. Learn more

Nipissing University

As part of International Women’s Week, Nipissing University held a virtual keynote talk by Dr. El Jones exploring social justice issues such as feminist anti-racism, prison abolition, and decolonization. Learn more

OCAD University

To celebrate the remarkable contributions of women, OCAD University’s Instudio highlights the works of OCAD University graduate and illustrator Katherine Verhoeven. Learn more here. Ontario Tech University

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Ontario Tech University is hosting a panel discussion highlighting inspirational women in the Nuclear and Clean Energy industry as well as an inspiring and entertaining workshop. Learn more

In partnership with International Women’s Forum, the University of Ottawa’s Centre for International Policy Studies recognized International Women’s Day by hosting a special roundtable discussion on women in international relations. Learn more

To celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) Queen’s University is hosting a networking and information session about the various women’s focused groups across campus. Learn more

Trent University

In recognition of International Women’s Day, Trent University created a video of women students and professors sharing how their identities have impacted them and inspired them within their fields. Learn more

Toronto Metropolitan University

To recognize and celebrate the contributions to academic excellence made by women on campus, Toronto Metropolitan University launched a new series, The Empowering Women in Academia. The series aims to recognize the contributions of women-identifying and non-binary staff as well as create conversations around gender equity challenges in higher education. Learn more

A writing circle, self defense workshop and panel discussion are only some of the events the University of Toronto Scarborough is hosting to celebrate International Women’s Day. These events bring together women students, entrepreneurs and artists from the local community to learn and share lived experiences. Learn more
