Statement by David Lindsay: Ontario’s universities thank Minister Deb Matthews and welcome Minister Mitzie Hunter to the sector

Ontario’s universities welcome Minister Mitzie Hunter to the sector, and look forward to working in partnership with her in her new role as Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development.

Minister Hunter has experience in the academic sector, and has been a strong advocate for students and the value of education in providing the skills and knowledge that help students create a better future for themselves, their communities and Ontario.

Ontario’s universities are partnering with the province, across all sectors, to help students thrive, to build strong and vibrant communities, and to drive a growing dynamic province.

On behalf of the Executive Heads of Ontario’s 21 universities, I also want to thank Minister Deb Matthews for her 15 years of public service, and of course her most recent years in cabinet as our minister.

During her time as Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development, she has introduced sweeping new changes to student aid, which on top of what universities already provide in loans, grants and bursaries, will make postsecondary education more affordable and accessible, ensuring many more students benefit from the opportunities that university provides.

We wish her well in the next chapter of her life.
