TORONTO, March 27, 2024 – “Ontario’s universities acknowledge the provincial government’s decision to maintain international undergraduate student applications at 2023 levels for those postsecondary institutions where international students as a percent of total students do not exceed 55 per cent. This approach recognizes that Ontario’s universities have been responsible in their management of international recruitment.
This means universities in Ontario can continue to attract the best and the brightest talent from across the globe. However, the decision to cap international undergraduate allocations at 2023 levels will restrict the ability for universities to modestly increase enrolment, which will exacerbate financial pressures on the sector.
Ontario’s universities have been responsible players in the postsecondary sector, basing international student enrolment on the unique needs and regional labour market demands of local communities. In fact, as a sector, universities have maintained modest levels of growth of international students in order to ensure those who do enroll are well supported and successful.
To help support international students, universities have developed leading practices that help ensure international students studying at an Ontario university have the best possible experience. Universities provide them with the supports and resources they need to succeed – including following rigorous recruitment processes, adhering to strong and transparent admissions practices and providing wraparound student supports, such as helping students find housing.
We look forward to continued collaboration with the provincial government to support the success of international students. By working together, we can ensure that Ontario remains a welcoming and competitive destination for global talent.”
