As artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly reshapes how we live, work, learn and innovate, it is creating both significant opportunities and complex challenges across our economy, labour market, education, research and governance. Ontario’s universities are helping lead this transformation. Through world-class research and commercialization, talent development and industry partnerships, they are helping advance the responsible adoption of AI across the province.
At the same time, universities are navigating important questions around governance, teaching, research integrity, equity and long-term institutional resilience. As AI continues to evolve, flexible planning and responsible leadership will be essential.
To help guide this work, the Council of Ontario Universities’ AI Task Force has released Charting a Path Forward for Ontario Universities in the Age of AI, a new report that sets out guiding principles, key opportunities and risks, and recommendations for the strategic, safe and ethical integration of AI across teaching, research and operations.
The report also calls for coordinated action by all levels of government and universities to advance responsible AI adoption, uphold academic integrity, support innovation and help ensure Ontario is prepared for an AI-driven future.
