To help ensure artificial intelligence delivers real-world value while protecting public trust, researchers at York University are advancing a strong and deliberate approach to responsible, human-centred AI. This work is focused on embedding ethics, policy and community input into the development of technologies that can help improve patient care, support frontline decision-making, and make public services more responsive and reliable across Ontario.
Through Connected Minds Neural and Machine Systems for a Healthy, Just Society, a first-of-its-kind initiative, researchers, community organizations, public sector partners, industry leaders and not-for-profit collaborators have come together to develop AI and advanced digital technologies that prioritize societal well-being, equity and real-world impact.
At the core of this approach is a simple principle: AI systems must be designed to serve the people and institutions that rely on them. York researchers are embedding principles such as fairness, accountability, accessibility, transparency, and inclusion directly into AI design and development – ensuring responsible innovation is built in from the start.
One example is Co-creating Intelligent NeuroTechnologies for Healthy Aging, where AI-enabled robotics and neurotechnologies are being developed with older adults, caregivers and care organizations to support mobility, cognition, emotional well-being and fall-risk assessment in long-term care and community settings – helping clinicians and care teams monitor needs earlier, respond more effectively, and improve quality of care.
This work extends across AI governance and applied research through initiatives such as the Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence for Public Health Advancement and the Centre for Artificial Intelligence & Society, where researchers are exploring how AI can strengthen public health decision-making, improve how data informs decisions, and support more effective public services in areas such as health care, smart cities and sustainability.
Together, these initiatives are advancing responsible AI across health care, public systems, emergency and disaster management, space robotics and cyber resilience, helping ensure AI technologies are not only innovative, but trusted, practical and responsive to the needs of individuals and communities.
