Designing Resilient Communities through Landscape Architecture

With a focus on preparing future leaders in landscape architecture, the University of Guelph’s Bachelor and Master of Landscape Architecture (BLA and MLA) programs provide hands-on learning opportunities, to help students learn how to plan, design and manage public spaces with human use and the preservation of the environment in mind.

Students work on real projects — from designing public spaces such as urban plazas, parks, conservation areas and residential developments, to restoring ecosystems that address climate resilience in urban and rural environments. The programs combine design studios, field studies, seminars and peer-to-peer collaboration to help students develop creative, technical and scientific skills. Located near natural landscapes and urban centers, the university’s School of Environmental Design and Rural Development helps students experience a range of design challenges to ensure they have an evidence-based education.

These programs integrate research, practice and community engagement, along with preparing students to design spaces that support environmental health, foster social connection and contribute to resilient, thriving communities.
