"Many of the techniques I learned at OCA in drawing and painting, I use every day in the operating room and when I’m painting, I use a lot of the things that I was taught as a surgeon.”

Fostering Creativity to Enhance Surgical Precision

With a goal to enhance surgeons’ understanding of how creativity can drive innovative solutions for human-centred challenges, OCAD University’s Fostering Your Creativity program blends art and medicine to inspire creative problem-solving in surgery.

Hosted by OCAD U’s School of Continuing Studies and in collaboration with the University of Toronto’s Department of Surgery, participating surgeons engage in art history, theory and hands-on studio courses like drawing, photography and woodworking. This interdisciplinary program fosters creativity, helping surgeons refine their skills by practicing precision, mindfulness and collaboration.

By integrating experiential learning, participants apply artistic techniques to refine their surgical skills, improve patient care and gain new perspectives on their medical practice. The program culminates in an exhibition that showcases the intersection of art and surgery, highlighting innovation and the reskilling of surgeons for the evolving demands of health care.
