To provide a hub for hands-on technical learning and a launchpad for careers in STEM, Laurentian University’s Intelligent Mobile Robotics Lab (LIMRL) is integrating teaching with cutting-edge research. The lab emphasizes practical skills in programming, control systems and robot design — preparing students for real-world applications in mining, manufacturing, health care and more.
Developed by an assistant professor, LIMRL is a new addition to Laurentian University’s Faculty of Science, Engineering, and Architecture. The dedicated lab space provides a platform for hands-on learning focusing on a range of mobile robots from wheeled platforms to advanced-legged humanoid robots.
The lab is already demonstrating its success, with two fourth-year Computer Science students winning four gold medals, a silver medal and securing first place overall at this year’s HuroCup Adult-Sized Humanoid Competition during the FIRA RoboWorld Cup. With a goal to expand the team and welcome more students from all disciplines, the lab not only provides a space for learning but serves as a launchpad for future careers in robotics.
