University students are turning classroom learning into real-world engineering experience by building York University’s first Formula SAE race car in 15 years and developing the technical, teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills future employers seek.
Working in specialized teams focused on powertrain, vehicle dynamics, body and aerodynamics, and research and development, engineering students prepared a Formula SAE vehicle for the 2026 Formula SAE Michigan competition. Weekly design sessions, computer-aided design, simulation work, component preparation for fabrication, research lab visits, industry networking events, and technical tours, provided valuable hands-on experience, helping students develop the technical, collaborative and problem-solving skills required to bring a vehicle from concept to competition.
The goal is to establish a lasting experiential learning program for future cohorts while expanding into additional competition categories, including EV development.
