University Startup Uses AI and Quantum Chemistry to Clean Water

Aiming to provide clean drinking water to underserved communities, students at Western University and the University of Toronto have launched Xatoms – a startup that powers cutting-edge quantum chemistry calculations and AI to drive innovation.

Xatoms leverages advanced quantum chemistry and AI to develop novel photocatalysts for sustainable water treatment in regions with limited access to clean water. With guidance from an Ivey Business School lecturer, the team has connected with Kenyan organizations for potential pilot projects.

Supported by Ivey and the Entrepreneurship and Sustainability Accelerator, Xatoms is expanding its impact by delivering life-saving solutions that drive health, education and economic opportunities for underserved communities.
