“Dr. Silva’s research stood out for its quality, and AskEllyn—a unique tool created by a survivor for survivors — has real potential to transform how patients support each other. As health-care resources are stretched thin, now is the time to consider how AI can improve care for those facing cancer.”

AI Companion Could Transform Breast Cancer Support

A groundbreaking research initiative led by a Brock University professor is exploring how an AI companion can provide empathetic support for breast cancer patients and their caregivers, helping them manage the difficulty of a diagnosis.

The project is testing the effectiveness of AskEllyn, a conversational AI tool designed to offer non-medical emotional support at all hours, in every language. This research aims to assess how AI might fill gaps – offering consistent companionship, easing anxiety and adapting to varied user needs across the cancer journey, from diagnosis through long-term survivorship. That could mean reduced burden on overextended services and more responsive, personalized care.

Looking ahead, the research aims to provide clinical evidence for AI-enabled conversational care, paving the way for its wider adoption and offering a scalable solution to support the growing and diverse needs of patients and their families.
